i've always wanted to be in the air force since I was small,

I am in 10th grade and I was wondering how I can prepare myself to go into the academy right out of high school, and then become a pilot in the USAF.

I can use any info you give me, I know some basic things about it but I want some of the information from people that are maybe in the air force that went through the academy, and what I should expect.

  1. Well you can go to the the academy website and they will give an idea how to prepare yourself.

Just an idea, the academy are highly selectively.

You must be well rounded in athletics, academics, and leadership

You might want to consider the ROTC scholarship also.

    www.usafa.af.mil :air force

  2. You don't give any information on what kind of pilot you would like to be.  If you were looking for the most action, then a helicopter pilot in the Marines/Army/Air Force would be a better option than anything in the Navy.  If you want to see the world, then fly heavies with the Air Force.  In the Army, you'd be better off as a warrant officer.  The commissioned officers don't fly as much.

Anyway, if you just want to fly, the Air Force Academy is your best chance to get a pilot slot.  In several recent years they haven't even been able to get enough volunteers to take all the pilot slots they get.

As far as preparation, the only really important preparation is a good attitude.  Get decent grades, decent SAT/ACT scores (they don't have to be great), play a couple sports, be involved in a few other school/community/religious activities, and you can get accepted.

Once you're in, there are very few ways to be kicked out that aren't directly related to your attitude.  If you want and try to be there (and avoid having any children) then you'll make it.  If you have any more specific questions about it, let me know.

  3. If you specifically want to be in the Air Force, that's one thing.  If you specifically want to be a pilot, however, you have a better chance in the Navy.  The Navy has more planes.

Now, if you don't have a preference between fixed and rotary wing, the Army is your best bet.

  4. To get into the academy,

    You need great grades,

    Alot of extramural activities.

And a recomendation from your Congressmen.

The Air Force has twice as many Air Craft as the Navy has, and twice as many pilots.

Somehow a rumor started that the navy has more planes.

But the AF has more F-16's, than the navy has total air craft.
