Question:

Becoming a fulltime wearer, help please

This is bad news. I've been for an eye test today and my prescription has gone up to -3.25. The optician tells me I'll struggle not to wear these full time. I've picked some fantastic frames but the difficult bit is how I make the transition to a full time wearer. I just never have been. For those who've done it already what can you suggest?

I just dread those comments!

  1. Let's be clear: there is no medical reason why you have to wear them all the time.  Yes, most people with your Rx would, but if there are times you prefer distance blur to wearing glasses, as long as you're not driving, that's fine.

(just don't smile at the guy across the room at the party until you've got close enough to be sure you wanted to.)

    Breakfast without -3.25 is fine.

There are some advantages to having the glasses on all the time: they are never in the other bag, car, house... when you decide you do want them, and they are much less likely to get sat or stepped on.

If you find you like the vision but don't settle to full-time glasses, then you've got the contact lens options, and after that the laser ones, to fall back on.

Personally I feel odd without my glasses.

  2. I have worn glasses forever, and love the styles, the colours, etc.  I've bought different pairs for different moods, to match different outfits, and have a lot of fun with the fashion side.

You can try contact lenses as well, or ortho-keratology even, which can correct your vision without surgery.

Ortho-K works while you sleep, then no glasses during the day!  No surgery, and easily reversible as well.  http://www.cbc.ca/consumers/market/files... (an article on ortho-k from both sides)

Either way, you will need glasses - so have some fun, pick some gorgeous frames, get lenses that change in the sun, buy prescription sun glasses, and be fabulous!
