Question:

Becoming a jockey? A possibility?

Horses are my passion! The only time I am happier than when I am near a horse, is when I am riding one! I really want to have a career that I enjoy doing, and I just had a revelation! I am 17, 4'7, and 90lbs. What if I became a jockey?! Am I too old? Is horse racing even humane? I am an experienced rider, I just don't know much about races! thanks for your advice =D

  1. Tom And Filidilty is right

You can be 16 to ride in U.S.OF A

some people just do not know

    goes for it Now

  2. One if you think it a a cruel sport do not even do it because your heart will never be in it

    You will horse break down

    horses going thur rails etc

So if your hearts really into it

    strat at a farm

You will need MORE experiance then you think

People say they ride and are good ,,and still have no clue what it takes to become a Jockey

You do not just go to the track and ask for a job

You have to be on a trainers list and have to be licensed in what ever you do

even hot walker have to have one

Then you have to past many tests , ridding and questions from the Stewards

Most people give advise and do not know how it works

I do I rode many yrs on the track and was a Bug Boy

When they say you have to weigh 110 they are WRONG

It is 105 or less period,

Unless you are going to ride quarter horses

Any way ,, Find out where you want to be there are many farms across the U.S.A.

    Go to YARDANDGROOM,COM

    GREAT SITE

and you can post for free with a pic,

and also look at the jobs being offered

they have over 500 of them ,,

Goss I wish people would stop saying stuff they really do not know anything about ,

    Its harder then you think

I have ridden race horses at all major tracks

and rode races when I was 21

  3. depending on where you live and if you are near a race track. you would have to start from the bottom. for example from mucking stalls to hot walking and then mabe working them out. your not too old. horse racing is a beautiful sport. good luck

  4. Wow! A leprechaun as a jockey! Just kidding! Go directly to a racer and ask them if they will have you! And keep asking until someone does it! It sounds ideal for you! Have you read the Piers Anthony "Phaze" stories with a character named Stile who is a jockey? You might like them, they are scifi/fantasy. Now, where is my pot'o'gold? HA! See ya! :P

  5. You are not too young. You need to find a trainer, preferably on a farm or training center willing to take you under their wing and teach you. Talk to people at these farms for advice they will steer you in the right direction. What state are you in?

  6. you are just perfect to become a jockey.you can't become a full jockey til you're 18 but you can be an apprentice. the weight limit is 110 and the racing saddles only weigh one or two lbs. the height limit is 5'4 so you are like the perfect person to be a jockey.
