Becoming a teacher in North Carolina?

I have a BFA in Creative Writing and want to become a teacher. Does anyone know what the steps are to get a certificate and then become licensed? I have a degree in creative writing but not in education. Any info would be helpful about the requirements in North Carolina. Thanks!

  1. Contact these people:

    http://www.ncpublicschools.org/

Tell them what you told us.

    They will guide you.

  2. You don't need to major in education as an undergraduate to become a teacher.

You'll apply to graduate school, pretty much like you applied to college.  I dunno about your state specifically, but around here it involves classes for 1-2 years, including the summer.  At the end of the program, you take a test that lets you become certified as a teacher for a particular age of students.  Then, you will probably have to spend a year student teaching, where you teach a class under the supervision of experienced teachers.

The names of the certification vary by state and program and then specify the age-group you've learned to teach (around here the letters say things like "M.A.T. -- Early Childhood" or "M.S.Ed -- Grades 6-12" etc).  Make sure your program says "with certification", otherwise you'll be learning to make education-related policy or something, instead of learning to teach a classroom of students.

Requirements depend on the grad school -- I believe they all require a B.A. (any major will do), and they tend to have things like a minimum of a 3.0 or 3.2 GPA.

Things that will also help you get into grad school: good recommendations, classes sorta relevant to education (such as psychology), and, if you want to teach High School or older, classes and jobs that relate to your particular field (sciences if you want to teach science, art if you want to teach art).  Most of all, you'll want to brag about any experience teaching people or working with kids.  They'll have spaces for all of it on the grad school application.

    Good luck!

  3. I found this link, http://www.teacher-world.com/statespages...  I think it might be of use to you, but since I am not a teacher, I'm not too sure.

  4. In certain counties you can be hired with an alternative license.  You will be required to take the required education classes and pass the Praxis II in order to receive a license to teach.
