I recently have decided to become a teacher. I have done 1 semester at a community college and plan to transfer to a university soon. I want to teach at a private school. I went to private schools all of my life and feel like it is my calling to teach at one. I love kids and have taught at my church for bible school.

My questions are what should I major in? What should I do after I graduate? I haven't talked to an advisor yet but want some advice before I do so.

  1. Be prepared- they do not pay that much.  I know money isn't everything but you have to make sure you have the time to devote (probably no extra time for second jobs) and money to put into your classroom.  Many private schools do require a college education, but the states can not mandate that they do because it's a private institution.  My advice is to pick a major that focuses on the age group you'd most like to teach.

You asked what to do after I graudate?  Don't wait until then... when you're student teaching begin sending out resumes and cover letters to schools you're interested in teaching in.  I did this about six weeks into student teaching so I had some relevant experience to share on my resume.  I had ten interview during student teaching and had a job within two weeks after graduation.  If you can, during YOUR education, volunteer or work at local daycares, schools, etc.  It's a bonus that you've taught at your churches bible school.  Good luck!

  2. It depends on the degree you plan to undertake, are you going to do a subject bachelor and then a teaching diploma/certificate. Also, what level of school did you want to teach.

I completed a Bachelor of Arts (majoring in English and history) and a Bachelor of Education- secondary (majoring in teaching English, History and ESL).

You should investigate the course you are interested in. They often have a set outline to begin with to get you started.

  3. It depends on what level you want to teach.  Most schools require for middle school and above, that you hold a degree in a the subject you are teaching, in addition to education requirements.  You should choose a subject in which you feel competent and interested.

If you are teaching Elementary, you'll need a degree in Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education depending on how the university program is set up.

  4. Majoring in education is your best bet.  While doing internships and student teaching, try to make contacts at schools where you'd like to work.  Then just apply after graduating.
