Question:

Becoming an Actor?

I'm 16, from Virginia, and I want to be an actor. i have no stage acting experience, but I have natural charisma and have been told by many that i should be an actor, though they are unaware that I actually might follow through with it.

The only thing is, and this is a pretty shallow thing to complain about, is the fact I have a gap inbetween my teeth. it's not huge like michael strahan's or something, it's just enough to notice. Will this play out as a big deal to people? Or limit my role capabilities?

Also, how do you think I should go about this, east to New York or West to california?

Thank you and any help is appreciated

  1. You should start getting some stage experience close to home by acting in plays at your school.  If you live near a good community theatre, you should also try out for roles there.  Next year, you should apply for apprentice or intern positions at summer theatres in your area (it's too late for this summer).

You don't say what part of Virginia you're from.  Are there any good professional theatres nearby?  If so, call and find out if they offer youth acting classes.

While you're building up your stage acting resume, you won't need to worry about your teeth.  A few years down the road, when you're ready for TV and film auditions, you might want to have some cosmetic dentistry work done, but it's really not an issue right now.

  2. The thing is, many people think that you have to be flawlessly attractive to become a successful actor. In reality, when casting for television and films, casting directors specifically look for an actor that looks like the part they are trying to cast. The character in the film or show may have, using you as an example, a slight gap in between their teeth. Generally, though, as long as it doesn't greatly affect your speech, it wouldn't matter either way.

I would recommend looking around, and applying to different acting agencies. I'm not too sure, but many prospective actors go to LA, so I would consider New York first. Then again, they go to LA for a reason; it has very good oppurtunites for actors. As I said, though, before thinking about moving, I would look around for an agent.

    Good luck with your acting!
