I am wondering what you have to do to get into a USMC Recon Battalion. Do you have the option after basic or do you have to put in time of service to do that.

  1. RECON units are a battalion level entity only..Each division has its own recon units which are used for the various battalions needs..

Force Recon no longer exist..It was dissolved into MARSOC..

To get into RECON you can either get a try out in your contract before you enter boot camp, try out at ITB/SOI if that is your MOS or once at your permanent unit you request to try out for it..

Most recon Marines come from the 0300 infantry MOS but this is not required..Just understand if your not infantry then your chances are less likely because a infantryman does this type work on a more frequent basis,

To apply for MARSOC you simply apply once at your permanent unit..If you are not infantry then you will never be a operatove of MARSOC but you can serve in support roles.

  2. You mean Force Recon. I would go into detail with you however I will just send you the link.

  3. Force Recon and Batt Recon are not the main place to go for SpecOps in the USMC anymore, MARSOC is. Force is almost dead and Batt is still around but going thru a lot of changes. MARSOC is better funded and will have more chances to do things real world since they are under SOCOM right now, the USMC funds Recon directly and they tend to treat them like a red headed step child unlike the other services who treat the SpecOps Communities they have pretty well. You can screen and if the Indoc is still the same, it is a 3 week selection for Recon, then you go thru a lot of schools, but I have not seen what they are up to in at least 4 years so the Selection may have changed.
