Okay so I have done all the leg work in researching this, and know its healthy- so don't post any answers saying it is not. The only concern I have is the transition and I am a college student supporting myself 100% with tuiition and rent and groceries. SO any advice on how to do it the smart way on a budget would be so very greatly appreciated. How to avoid crashes (mmeaning eating dairy and meat)? Any advice!!!

  1. when i first became vegan, i just gave up all of it at once and straved my self and lost 14 pounds in about a week and a half. it wasnt a healthy at first because i had no idea what i was doing but juts cutting out all meat and dairy and animal products but now im on a healthy vegan diet. i would consider you buyin silk soy milk, at first you it will taste sweeter, but you'll get used to the taste, and buy alot of veggies and cook them as many ways as possible.

heres a good website for recipies

  2. i first gave up all meat, then eggs, then milk&cheese and suchh.

transitioning from vegetarian to vegan is much easier.

if you want to avoid crashes, you should really be doing this for yourself & because you want to, not because someone else is or for any other reason.

also try going from 2%milk to skim to soy, it helps :D

i agree to not get into eating tofu or fake meat, it's expensive and not good.

my favorite is light vanilla soy milk & reese puffs!

good luck, it's hard at first.

  3. 1. Buy from the bulk bins way cheaper and more environmental too (reuse your own containers).

    2. Use brown rice and whole wheat and or sprouted breads. They have more protein and the carbs are more complex which will not only help you to avoid crashes but actually give you long term sustainable energy.

    3. Quinoa is a great food complete in protein. I usually just mix it in with my rice.

    4. Spirulina is also another great super food extremely high in complete protein, b12, and iron.

    5. Soy silk makes great tasting vegan milks and yogurts but I'd make sure to get a variety like oat, rice, hemp, hazelnut, multi-grain etc milks as too much soy is not good for you.

    6. Amaranth and corn make a complete protein and is high in lysine which most grains are deficient in.

    7. Fresh veggie in fruits. Make sure you eat a portion of these raw which will boost the immune system and give you important enzymes that get destroyed in the cooking process.

    8. Eat in a lot. Going out to eat is expensive and often compromising experience.

    9. Buy a good vegan cook book and try at least one new recipe a week. You'll be a culinary expert in no time.

    10. Make sure you have a vegan community to support you which is not only helpful for information but moral support as well.

Best of wishes on your most compassionate and mindful endevor. : )

  4. Depending on your college, there may already be vegetarian options (which can easily be made vegan) in the cafeteria.

If not, you definitely should talk to someone in charge of food service, because there are MANY people who aren't vegan that need veg options (allergies, religious reasons for not eating meat, etc.) They will probably be willing to make small changes at least.

    Good, cheap food:

beans, hummus (make it yourself: garbanzo beans + olive oil in blender), smoothies, vegetable sandwiches, burritos, huge salads with tofu.

In all, try to avoid meat substitutes (like frozen veggie burgers,  hot dogs, soy cheese, soy ice cream, etc.)Although they start tasting real good after awhile, they are super expensive and you can definitely live without!

    Good luck!

  5. You've already been given some great advice about food/nutrition, etc., so I'll just tell you how I avoided "crashes" -- I just pictured dying hens in battery cages, calves suffering in veal pens, slaughter houses, etc.. It made me never want flesh, dairy products or eggs ever again. It's not a pleasant thought. I never want to taste pain and suffering again. After a while, you don't need the images -- you don't miss any of it at all.

  6. well im not a vegan any more cuz you can crash easely espacially with no suport from friends and family i started as a vegetarian then i slowly trancition cuz its something that cant be done just cuz you cant wake up and say im vegan today so i sugest to make out a shopping list and well its a lil expensive
