  1. i know several that are well-off ...

    they saved every bonus

they used the GI bill to get a college degree and worked while they schooled

    they avoided credit card debt

they kept working even after they could get a pension

they either started their own business or worked towards high level management positions

    hope this helped!

oh, and they also bought houses within their means near base that they rented to other military personnel when they were deployed ...

basically:  education, stay out of debt, find multiple streams of income ...

  2. In recent studies it has been shown that people that have spent a career in the military are extremely successful (financially wealthy).

    - Officers that serve 5 years or more are typically making over 6 figures within the first 5 years of their civilian careers.

    - Enlisted that get a degree and serve a career will usually make 6 figures in the first 5 years of there civilian careers

    - Enlisted that serve 8 years and get an AA degree or better will make approximately 50% more than they were making in the military by year 5 in a civilian career.

    - GEN (r) Shinseki has stated that his friends in civilian industry have said that they would rather hire a military leader and train them in the technical aspects of the industry than mold a leader from the beginning.

    - Many Senior Officers and NCOs have significant income producing real estate portfolios by the time they retire from the military due to the 3-5 year changes of station.

Essentially, if you are financially and mentally disciplined, do well in the military, and seek an education you will be very successful outside of the military.

  3. If you want to become "rich" after the military.....you should plan on going to college and getting a degree.

Most top paying jobs these days require some form of education other then a HS diploma.......

  5. Define super rich!  I spent my time in the Marines, Vietnam 67 and 68, and I ma now (after a lot of hard work) a Vice President of a corporation and have been here for 26 years and make well into 6 figures...does that qualify!

  6. 'wealthy' is hard to define.

I did 20+ years in the Navy.

I took my $65k/year tax free salary and I invested in apartment buildings. My Dw and I collected one property at each duty station.

When I got my military pension, I had collected four apartment buildings.

    So I retired at 42.

Is that 'wealthy'? I don't know.

But I have been retired for 7 years now. I am not 50 yet.

  7. Joseph Pulitzer fought in the Civil War, then became a newspaper tycoon. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Puli...

  8. No most turn g*y

  9. Work hard and back your work up with a degree and you can become whatever you want.

  10. The number of people that are successful after the military is countless.

Just look at how many Presidents were ex-military.

The idea I think you are getting at is that military personnel would be 'lost' in the civilian section. Actually it is quite the opposite.

We (military personnel) never call in sick, are never late, have a professional demeanor and appearance daily, work late and weekends without hesitation. Because of this, employer's tend to hire us quicker.

I have worked several part-time jobs while in the Navy. Each one my interviews consisted of: "Are you in the Navy?", "yes", "Oh, you're hired".

I continued the same work ethic that I had come to accept as "normal" and outperformed my civilian peers without even noticing.

People who are successful in the military are usually just as successful when they leave.
