Bede Durbidge and Kolohe Andino survive Round 2 of Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast – Surfing News
Australia’s Bede Durbidge and America’s Kolohe Andino prevailed in their respective Round 2 heats at the first stop of 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, which went down Snapper Rocks in Queensland, Australia,
on Sunday, February 26.
Durbidge took the win over Portugal’s Tiago Pires to advance through into Round 3, removing the latter from the contention for the event title.
In the final heat of Round 2, Andino got the better of America’s Brett Simpson to secure his place in the next round while eliminating the latter from the competition.
After a disappointing day 1, the surfers were determined to redeem themselves and extend their life in the event on Sunday.
Squaring off with Pires in the 11th heat of Round 2, Durbidge got down to business right away and collected a 6.83 off his first business-wave. He later added an additional 6.70 points to his account to move to a heat-total of 13.53 points.
Pires got off to a decent start, scoring a 5.33 off his first business-wave. He was required to step up a little to capitalise on the opportunity take the win, but only managed to back his first-wave score with a 5.40-point wave, finishing with a heat-total
of 10.73 points.
The final wave of the round pitted the young Californians Andino and Simpson against each other in a battle for survival.
As the heat kicked-off, the 27-year-old Simpson got off to an impressive start, collecting a 7.17 off his first business-wave. He backed it up with a 6.70-point wave to get to a heat-total of 13.87 points.
Andino respected with a 5.83-point wave and immediately followed it up with an impressive 8.50-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 14.33 points, walking away with the win as a result.
“I’m stoked to win my first heat on tour,” Andino said. “I don’t think I was surfing too good though. I was kind of jittery out there with all my nerves and stuff. The end of the waves were kind of tweaking me because they were dumping in shallow water.
I didn’t see too many people doing airs today, so I just tried to go for one out the back and I’m stoked that I did.”
The surfing action continued at Snapper Rocks with the remaining heats of Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast’s Round 2.
