Bede Durbidge and Miguel Pupo enter Round 3 of Quiksilver Pro France – 2011 ASP World Tour
Quiksilver Pro France continued to feature intense head-to-head battles during Round 2 as Australia’s Bede Durbidge took on his compatriot, Daniel Ross in the eighth heat, whereas Brazil’s Miguel Pupo competed with his countryman, Raoni Monteiro, in the
ninth heat for a Round 3 spot on Thursday, October 6, at the iconic beach-break of La Graviere in France.
The eighth heat turned out to be a real intense affair, with both the Australians making a determined effort for top honours. However, Durbidge eventually managed to capture the win, consequently going through into the third round while pushing Ross out
of the competition.
The ninth heat battle turned out to be a real nail-biter as well, though Pupo eventually managed to edge past Monteiro to walk away with top honours and hence extend his life in the event by moving into Round 3, while the latter was consequently eliminated
from the competition.
After failing to make much of an impact during their Round 1 heats, both Durbidge and Ross desperately needed to come up with a successful result in the second round. As they met in the eighth heat of the second round, Ross got off to a strong start, locking
a wave in the opening minutes to post a 5.00 on the score-board. However, Durbidge soon stripped him of the advantage by responding with a 5.57-point wave.
As the heat progressed, Durbidge added an additional 6.00 points to his account, moving to a heat-total of 11.57 points. Ross needed a 6.57 off his second business-wave to get his hands on victory, but ended up getting a 6.50 instead, consequently finishing
with a heat-total of 11.50 points. The 0.07-point deficit forced him to surrender victory to his rival, sending him through to the next round.
The ninth heat pitted the 19-year-old Pupo against Monteiro in a battle for survival. The showdown was expected to be an epic one, as both the Brazilians were extremely skilled and competitive, something that they had been quite consistently proving throughout
the year.
As the heat got under-way, Pupo caught a wave to post 6.27 points on the scoreboard. However, Monteiro quickly rose to the occasion and responded with a 6.83-point wave to take the lead.
Pupo managed to gain an upper hand once again through a 6.43-point wave, moving to a heat-total of 12.70 points. Despite there being an ample time for Monteiro to search for a 5.87-point wave in order to move ahead of his rival on the score-board, he only
managed to collect a 5.77 off his second business-wave, falling short of the required score by merely 0.10 points. This forced him to concede victory to Pupo and get eliminated from the competition.
