Bede Durbidge removes Dane Reynolds from Rip Curl Pro Search in Round 2 – 2011 ASP World Tour
The second day of the latest Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour event, Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco, started off with Australia’s Bede Durbidge squaring off with the seasoned American surfer, Dane Reynolds, in the fifth heat of Round
2 at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, America, on Wednesday, November 2.
The battle for survival was won by Durbidge, who came up with an impressive performance to defeat and consequently eliminate Reynolds from the competition while securing a place for himself in the third round.
Things had not started off ideally for the 28-year-old Durbidge at Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco. Despite putting up a remarkable effort, he had been deprived of victory in the opening round of the competition at the hands of his own countryman, Adrian
Buchan. This got him relegated into Round 2, where he had to surf again in order to try and earn a place in the third round.
Pitted against the Australian in the second round was Reynolds. The American had remained out of action for most part of the current elite tour season due to injuries. The current event was his second of the 2011 World Tour and he was yet to make a solid
impact. After a poor performance in the first round, Reynolds was desperate for a win in order to stay alive in the competition.
As the two surfers met in the fifth heat of Round 2 in the early morning waves of Ocean Beach, a thrilling contest was indeed in store for the fans. Neither of the two surfers was going to let the other kick him out without putting up a tough fight.
As the heat got underway, Reynolds got himself in a dominant position early on by drawing blood with a 6.17-point wave. However, Durbidge soon managed to shed off some pressure by locking a wave to post a 5.00 on the score-board, keeping the battle very
much alive.
As the heat got past the mid-way stage, Durbidge got hold of a left-hander and utilised to up his score by 7.00 points, taking his heat-total to 12.00 points. Reynolds had been struggling to earn another decent score after a strong beginning and suddenly
found himself on the back-foot. Running out of time, the American was only able to add an additional 3.00 points to his account and ended up finishing with a heat-total of 9.17 points. This resulted in a comfortable 2.83-point victory for Durbidge, who advanced
through into the next round as a result.
