Question:

Bedroom Design?

Hey. I will shortly be having the walls of my bedroom repainted, and will also be having the floor changed.

Brown is going to be an unavoidable colour, as most of the furnishing, aswell as the cupboards, are all brown. The frame of my bed is a shiny black, with small hints of white in the bedhead.

My room is pretty small, so i dont want a colour scheme that is going to make it feel even smaller.

Other than that, there arent really any restrictions. Anyone have ideas what i can do with the walls/floor?

Im an 18 year old male by the way :)

Thanks.

  1. You didn't say what kind of windows or light source you might have in there.

But, I wouldn't worry about your furniture being brown and dark.  There are many things you can do to make sure that there is color in your room.

You might consider painting the walls a light tan and then focus on bringing in vibrant colors through other ways--curtains, carpets and bedding.  Think white, bright red, or Carribean blues; or Harley Davidson oranges.  Not necessarily all together, but one of them.  All of those colors will mix within the brown/black schemes.  Many people think brown furniture on top of tan walls will be too much brown family, but it looks really clean and masculine.  Just don't go too tan.  Other option is a blue-gray mix.

If you don't have a window and are in a sort of den or attic like room, then I wouldn't be painting the walls anything too dark.  Also, if there are no restrictions or $ limits, they make really cool large wall stickers that are removeable.  Flames, Asian letters, music notes and of course, all kinds of girlie stuff which probably doesn't interest you.

The other thing you didn't say was whether or not you hang out on your floor or not--sitting there playing video games or anything.  If so, then you will want to get a soft carpet.  Hardwood isn't nice on the butt even if you have great throwrugs.

    Hope that helps.

  2. play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find something that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think a pale blue - practically white - like "ice cube" (# 6252) would look great.

You can also take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:

You can get color suggestions & they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.

  3. If there is lots of brown coloring in the room and you want to keep the walls light to give it a larger feel, you might want to look at a nice sage green color or even a champagne color (in the subtle yellow family).  If you wanted to go with something more bold, you could incorporate a deep red, burgandy-like color just on the wall behind your bed and leave the other 3 walls a lighter beige.  It's just paint so have fun, I'm sure you will find the perfect color.  Pick up a few color swatches from home depot and compare in your room and go from there.

  4. Gray is a very masculine color. Even with brown furniture, gray will play cool. Go to ralphlaurenhome.com: They have really good shades of gray. For the floor, you would want a very dark brown, almost black wood flooring. It's really rich and nice. For your room, you might want to put up some industrial accents.
