  1. i would find the contractor and make them fix it or threaten to go public about it.  that always works

  2. Here's the easy fix.Go to the hardware store and get yourself some wood dowelling ,slightly smaller or as tight as you can put into the old s***w holes with wood glue.

Drill a small pilot hole in the dowelling ,and replace the screws into the door hinges.

    Done ,like new!

  3. fill the holes in the door with wood glue and then stick in as many wooden tooth picks as you can cut off the extra length.  Let it dry...when you s***w into the door now it will have something to hold to

  4. try some new hinges, sounds like something is stripped ,get wider screws, take them off, and go to the hardware store, and have them help if you are still unsure.

  5. You do not have a warranty on it?

In any case, if the carpenter who hung the door did it right, he leveled the door frame by putting shims on the hinge side of the door.  That is good news since that means there is a 2 x 4 wood stud within a few inches of the door frame.

The door frame is usually made out of 1 x 5 wood which is why the screws in the hinge plate are so short.  While the wood is said to be 1 inch thick, it really is only about 3/4 of an inch thick, so you do not need anything longer than 3/4 inch unless you get a 1-5/8 inch s***w or slightly longer to go through the frame into the 2 x 4.  I would not do this yet.

Take one of the screws out of the hinge plate go to the hardware store and buy the same type of s***w just one size larger.  As you replace each s***w, squirt some carpenter's glue into the hole the s***w is going into and also coat the s***w with the glue.  If they all tighten up leave the door open or closed for however long it says that the glue takes to dry.

You did not say which side of the hinge was stripped.  I am assuming it was the frame side and not the door itself.  Very often when one side loosens up the other does too, so you might have to replace all the screws.

If increasing the diameter of the s***w does not work, you will have to get longer screws so it can grab into the 2 x 4.  Do not use drywall screws.  They are not made to withstand the constant opening and closing and will often break, which will be a bigger mess to repair than the mess you have now.

To find the length of s***w that you need, take one of the hinge screws out and with a small drill bit drill through the old s***w hole when you have drill through the frame the drill should spin easier.  Take you finger off the trigger and push the drill bit until it hits the stud.  Look at the point where the drill bit has just entered the frame then slowly pull it back out and measure the distance from the drill tip to that point and add 3/4s of an inch.  That is the length of the screws you will need.  Buy the same size screws that you just put in but at the new length.  Make sure they are wood screws and that the s***w head is the same size as the original screws.  Coat the s***w with glue and put them in.

Be very careful not to over tighten the screws because it will then cause the door frame to warp which will cause problems with the door closing properly.  Good luck.

  6. What's up tree guy we look alike!

  7. remove short screws and replace with longer ones this should solve the problem make sure new screws have coarse thread

  8. Get a s***w that is longer.
