  1. I don't know if there is any such thing as an "average size" for either a residential bedroom or home office.  I have seen bedrooms that seemed as small as a shoebox and as large as a gym.

From a practical point of view, a small bedroom might be 10' x 10', not including a closet.  A room that size would hold two twin size beds, a small dresser, and maybe a small student desk.  I shared a room like that with my brother when we were kids.  A large bedroom might be 13' x 15', not including a closet.  It would hold a king size bed, a pair of nightstands, a triple dresser, and a chest of drawers.  Many upscale new homes these days have master bedrooms that are even larger.

The size of a home office usually depends on the needs of the person, or persons, that intend to use it.  I have seen very functional home offices built into little more than a large closet.  They are usually done with carefully planned built in combination desk/file cabinet/shelf units.  Just like bedrooms, many of today's upscale homes have large rooms intended as home offices.  Plans often include special lighting, electrical outlets, network/data, and phone wiring.

Since you are asking about both, I have a suspicion that you may be considering converting a bedroom to a home office.  Based on my personal experience, I can tell you that whatever square footage you settle on for the room, eventually it will seem small.  A file cabinet here, a table for office equipment there, a bookcase, a television, and maybe a larger desk ... I'm sure that you get the picture.  Best advice is to get the largest room you can for a home office.

Good luck with your search for information.
