Question:

Beef Wellington, anyone?

I wanted to take out my husband for father's day as he is a new dad. We both love that show with gordon ramsay and the chefs that compete. They are always serving the beef wellington. I heard that it is an english dish. I cannot find any restaurant that serves Beff Wellington in LA county. Any suggestions?

  1. Iit's really just a beef roast (usually tenderloin) wrapped in puff pastry.  Look for a recipe - it's fairly simple to make at home.

  2. Wow, that really surprises me. As the other person alluded to, Beef Wellington isn't all that difficult to make - it's just a bit time consuming to prepare.

If you decide to make it at home, you can buy puff pastry that is already prepared (which is the hardest part about making Beef Wellington, as far as I'm concerned). Give it a go. You may come to realize that it is much easier than you think.

    Happy Father's Day.

  3. Le Petite Chateau in Norrth Hollywood has it on their menu:  Check out:  http://www.lepetitchateau.org/

  4. If price is not an issue, consider THE PENTHOUSE RESTAURANT located in The Huntley Hotel, in Santa Monica.  They serve "Wellington Style" filet mignon (very steep price, if I can recall, around 40.00 per entree).  Really upscale, high end restaurant.

Another location to consider is in San Pedro, known as THE WHALE & ALE. Much more moderately priced.   They have Beef Wellington.  Not many restaurants today offer this entree, (unless is a special for the day).

Hope this helps with your search.

  5. Here is the exact Gordon Ramsey recipe. He does it quite differently. First of all, it's portioned for 2 people vs. the traditional 6-8. Second, he coats the beef with English Mustard and puts an outer layer of parma ham to keep the pastry from soaking. Lastly, he doesn't use a pate, but does use a very dry duxelle. I like his changes personally.

Follow the videos below and see the related pages for detailed recipes. If you want a more traditional version try the Cooks Illustrated site.

  6. If a restaurant has it, they might not offer it on fathers day since it is time consuming to make.

At one time I think I saw it at the Disneyland Hotels Steakhouse 55.  I haven't been there for well over a year.   If that doesn't work, you might check with the high class steakhouses, Ruth Chris's, Flemming's, Mortons, etc.  These are rather high priced restaurants.
