Hello My cousin Has been out of the USA about one year and half...and Now he wants to return..but technically if you stay outside the USA for more than one year you lose your resident status(Greencard)But now if he gets a brand new passport how will US immigration know how long he has been gone..if the US currently has no Exit passport control?

  1. FAA shares flight information with the homeland security.(U.S. govt don't got ways to track exit information)

edit: i know green card holder don't have U.S. passports....immigration officer at the airport is going to ask him, how long he been out of the U.S.

  2. With him being out of the country more than a year, he has already lost his green card.

All of those agencies are connected to one an another and know of the goings on of all.

  3. well the information can easily be known to the Us gevornment its not a big deal for them. But yes the greencard gets expired after an year or so.

  4. Titus Pullo - the cousin is NOT a US citizen so he/she doesn't have a US passport - so it's not on the state department's record.

I don't know the answer to this but I'm interested in finding out if some one knows.

Edit: George, airline manifest shows the passengers in the flight that you came in from.  How are they to know which one you left on?  It's not asked by the CBP and what if you don't know?  Are they going to interrogate every single LPR that comes in the port of entry?

  5. manifests cover all passengers, not just Americans. so, if he left 18 months ago, they should know about it, unless your friend changes his name on his new passport. But then, his green card wouldn't help much, now would it?
