Hi everyone, sadly we were burgled on Saturday night. They burgled us whilst the whole family was sleeping.

I have insurance but am worried that I dont have shop receipts for the stuff stolen and as I have never made a claim before I am unsure if they will reimburse us the cost of the goods taken without receipts. A lot of the stuff was given to us as gifts and we obviously dont have receipts.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks to anyone whom helps.

  1. Sorry to hear your news. This happened to us a couple of years ago (in UK, don't know where you are). We didn't need receipts, just made a list of everything that had gone and sent it in. Talk with your insurers asap - you will need your crime number (the police will have given you this).

If you phone your insurers, they will tell you what they need, sorry I don't know how much this varies between companies, and I expect it depends partly on what sort of policy you have. Ours were very helpful and sympathetic, but would only speak with the person named on the policy. Hope this helps - it's a horrible situation.

  2. First...file a police report and detail everything taken. If you run across other things that are missing later...call the police officer and add it to the report.

Second...insurance company will want the police report (may order it themselves from the police dept) to help document what you are claiming. If there is nothing out of the ordinary (like a lot of computers or guns) that was stolen, then you should be OK. If you have any photos that were casually taken with the Contents in the background, then that would be helpful too.

Your adjuster will probably send you some forms to fill out what was stolen and the cost. Do your research on the costs, be thorough and don't rush the forms back in...take your time.

Terrible thing to be burglarized. Time will only help to make you forget. Good luck and stay positive.

  3. Do you own your home or are your renting?  Home insurance will cover up to a set dollar amount.  If you are renting, you need to have renter's insurance.  Contact your agent to get the ball rolling.  He will help you through the process.  You will have to have a police report to back up your claim.

  4. Insurance companys understand that people don't keep receipts for everything.  As long as your contents insurance was at the right sums insured amount and that any items that were worth over £1500 (amount varies with different companies) were insured as specified items then everything should be fine.  All you can do is put in your claim and explained what happened.  Anything they need they will ask for.  Good luck.

  5. god how did they get in thats bloody worrying ye were all asleep if some one had woken up ye could of got seriously hurt you must be fair shaken by it i know i would .

give your insurance co a ring they will go through the whole lot with you over the phone , i doubt they will need receipts i presume they give you the book value of the stuff like a car

    if it got stolen

i hope it all goes well and ye can stop them coming in where ever they went in to your house

  6. Whover did it should be taken out into the street and stoned! You won't need receipts - get an alarm and put it on even at night.

The government and courts have to get much tougher on this scum.

  7. First things first get a police report. The insurers will initially ask for receipts but failing that they'll ask to see some sort of proof of purchase like a credit card statement. With regards to some items beings gifts they'd either want to see the packaging or the instruction booklets or guarantees. Essentially they're looking to see something that shows these items were in your possession. At the very least you could send copies of any photos taken over the course of time that incidentally show you using these items. I would advise you write a letter explaining the circumstances when you submit this info with the claim form.

However it would be a concern to me from a claims point of view that you were broken into while you were asleep. Do you not have an alarm and how did they break in, what type of locks do you have?

  8. Most insurance policies have old for new, so you'll need to get a price to replace the good, make a list of items stolen and all damage done, then get it valued and first give a copy to the police, then you claim for everything on the list, like for like, but don't claim for ridiculous thing, if someone saw a transit van outside don't claim for an artic full get the picture, you might find something that as been damaged such as a camera or a sat nav so test everything is still working because scum bag thieves often do more damage than value of stolen goods, just make the claim and see what transpires.

  9. Sweetheart, very few of us, if anyone, has receipts for all their possessions, the insurers are well used to this.  Sometimes they will ask for receipts for especially high-value or new items, but they do understand how the world works.  If you get in difficulty, just give them a ring and they'll advise you.
