  1. It can be rewarding, and pleasant, but it can also involve a lot of physical support. Quite literally, you could end up wiping other people's bottoms for them! You can also find yourself having to cope with physical attacks, bites, scratches, and a lot of frustration. On the other hand, you can find yourself making a real difference to people's lives, and not many jobs give you that chance. A lot depends on the residents - 'learning disabilities' covers a very broad spectrum.

  2. NVQs are National Vocational Qualifications..Equiv to an GCSE.

As for your job..welleveryone is variable dependent on your tolerance level, patience, and understanding.

Empathy is good and discipline in this sort of work. Its tough, challenging but also empowering and satisfation is great.

    Good luck

  3. It can be a wonderful job, but it's not for everybody.  You would have to try it and see.  If it is right for you, you will love it, because you are making a real difference to people, and probably you will have a lot of fun.  While it is true that a lot of physical care can be involved, that also is something you have to experience to see if it suits you--but don't decide that in the first few days; it takes everyone some time to get used to it, but soon it is just part of the job.  It can be hard work, because you may have to deal with some very tense issues, but the rewards are great.  You have to be a "people person" and willing to let those seven people control their own lives and be themselves, valuing them as the individuals they are.

It is a field with great opportunities if you take to it and are good at it.  Don't worry about whether you could do it, just have a go and be honest about whether you enjoy it.  Doing the NVQ will help you to work through the values and make sure you know how to meet your responsibilities.  Best of luck to you.  I hope you make it, because we need good people in this work.

  4. It's a job with a purpose.

It can be a great stepping stone to other areas.

You get a nationally recognised qualification.

It beats the sh*t out of flipping burgers at Maccy D's.

Check out the pathways that this can open up for you, it may be the incentive you need to go for it.

A friend of mine went from support worker to teaching support for autistic children, he loves it.

Many support workers can go on to train for residential management courses, care managers, child support officers. the list is endless. there's also the psychology route, too.

  5. it is hard and a lot of people would find it to unpleasant-you need to think long and hard about this-anyone who wants to work with vulnerable people should never be thinking of the money-this is not a factory these are peoples lives-nvqs are what most employers look at in this field of work so they are very worthwhile-have a short trial if its not for you please be honest and get out of it
