Question:

Beer Experts Needed.. Part 2???

So I am completely unable to find the Delirium Ultimum or Delirium Millennium varieties of beer for sale in the US. They may have been limited production. So now, my question is, what other beers are comparible to my boyfriends taste. He likes Delirium tremens, Duvel, Stella, Dog Fish Head (I think that's what it's called). Anyone have similar taste and have some suggestions so I can put together a case of different Belgian ales for him ? Also, we can move out of Belgium if you have other favorites that still go along with that taste. Thanks for your replies!!!

  1. it sounds like you need to look for Belgian Strong Ales.  Duvel is one of the best and easiest to find, but some others are:

    Rochefort Trappistes 8

    Chimay Blue

    Unibroue Trois Pistoles

    La Chouffe

Some other fine Belgian Ales are:

    Orval

    Ommegang Rare Vos

As for Dogfish Head (from Delaware), you might consider the Red & White, a Belgian Strong Ale style beer.

    Good luck!!

  2. Yes... you'll have a h**l of a time finding Ultimum and Milennium.

So...how much are you willing to put into this? Because one of the greatest beer gifts I've ever seen was when my best friend was given a case of Thomas Hardy's Ale. 24 bottles... one bottle a year for the next 24 years! Brilliant! You see...TH can be aged for up to 25 years, the oldest I've had was 15.

The greatest beer I've ever had was Westvleteren 12. Head by many (most) to be the best beer in the world. Brewed by Belgian Trappist Monks... this beer is diffecult to get ahold of. You can often find a few bottles on eBay if you look.

Currently at $18 for two bottles... not a bad price.

Also, what Dogfish Head is he a fan of? DFH is my own personal favorite American brewer. For Christmas I gave my new brother-in-law a sampling of the DFH Extreme Beers, 120 Minute IPA, World Wide Stout and Old School Barleywine... three of my personal favorites from them.  The Palo Santo Marron is out of this world.

Because of the high ABV these for aren't available in all states that DFH is available in...I often send a few bottles back to Ohio to my aforementioned friend.

    EDIT:

Curious to see what Part 1 was about I peeked... Try Sal's Beverage World... Depending on what suburb you live in this is may be a bit of a travel. But well worth it. As good as if not better of a selection than Binny's South Loop location.

You can also try Andseronville Wine and Spirits on the corner of Clark and Foster on the Northside. Not a huge selection but enough to keep me happy when I can't make it to Sal's or Binny's.
