Tell me why minors should be protected by law about certain things. We can drive cars, but we cannot buy our own insurance. We can have jobs but have to stay in school until we are 16. We cannot buy a car in our own names until we are 18. Then Only if we have credit or our parents will co sign. If We are 18 we can be arrested for contributing to the delinquency of minors if we are at a party with friends who are under 18 and it gets busted but we aren't old enough to buy alcohol legally anyway. Stupid.

So what was the Congress of the US thinking when it made 18 the age of Adulthood?

  1. Well I don't know. By 16 (17 in some states) we can be charged for crimes as adults.

What I don't understand is why at 18 we can die for our country, but we can't drink.

The US Government does things to protect us and we wont necessarily understand them until we are a lot older.

  2. Well let's see here...what is the big event that most teenagers experience once they turn 18?

    Answer:  COLLEGE.

Meaning that you are techincally on your own.  You are not just living off of Mom and Dad's money now, if you want new clothes, you got to pay for it, if you want food, you got to go to the grocery store and get it.  And a lot of teenagers once they get into college and turn 18 and such start to get their own credit cards and all of that.

Congress adopted the "if you're under my house, you're under my rules" ideal...just twisted it a bit.  But be grateful right now, trust me, I miss the days of being on my parent's insurance policy.  And I miss the days where I could buy stuff without worrying about my credit score.

And just asking, but how many busted parties have you been to?  Because I've been to several, and the police will arrest anyone under the age of 21 who has been drinking, and they will arrest the person who is throwing the party regardless of age.  If it's your party, you're responsible for keeping it legal and safe.  That's the way it works (I date a cop, I've been almost arrested for contributing to the delinquincy of minors when I was only 19, I know how that works).

So be grateful and enjoy it while you can...you'll look back one day and realize how good you had it.  But if it bugs you so much that the legal age of adulthood is 18, why don't you start a grassroots movement to lower it to 16?  Bug the c**p out of your senators.  You could use this post to support your stance.

  3. I agree with the cosigning for things. If you are young you might not have that steady of a job, so companies want to make sure that you have money to pay them.

Other than that, I do not agree with alot of the laws. Teenagers need to be allowed to be responsible and not be treated like little children.

I went into a spencers and tried to buy a lolly pop shaped like a p***s. I was told to leave the store when I could not show them an ID because I had been 16 at the time. The age of consent in NJ is 16. I could have legally touched an actual p***s!!! But I could not buy a lolly pop??

It just makes no sense. Im so glad im almost eighteen and putting this bullshit behind me.

  4. Ferreal.

And 17 year olds can't do adult things but they can be punished like adults. LAME.

  5. Because the you have to gradually slip into "adulthood".  To throw it all at you at once would be destructive and not the result the government wants to see.  Just like with various other things in life, you get a little bit of responsibility at a time.  Over time, you learn to master the little stuff and then move on to the next.  That's not to say that minors don't do things they shouldn't in the first place.  As with anything, there will always be people that think they can break the rules.

I remember being a teenager.  I wish I hadn't been in such a hurry to grow up.
