Question:

Beer traps for slugs?

I have been told that this is a great way of getting rid of slugs. My question is - do I have to go out at night and remove the slugs that go into the beer? I saw loads of slugs in the dish of beer last night but they were all gone this morning. I thought thay drowned in the beer and died happy but I think they must go in, have a drink and then get the munchies so attack the nearest plant they find ! Any advice or comments?

  1. they eat & drink almost anything! even coke would work but whatever ya use make sure its deep enouth so they can't get out, i got them coming in my house thru a small hole so i just put lots of salt down it & havn't seen any since : )

  2. Ha Ha!!  Good one.  I have heard that one too..... about putting out beer to deter the slugs and like you I presumed they died a happy death!  I invested in some slug pellets when sorting out my garden, and in the morning felt so guilty, (like another Bin Laden!) with all the 'bodies' that had died as a result, I called everyone I know to find an alternative way of getting rid of slugs that like to eat plants.  I was advised to put sharp sand round the bottom of the plant/flower, as they do not like to slide along on this.  It has worked!!!  A friend of mine suggested crushed eggshells as another way of doing it.

Now I have read what you have put, I have to try the beer though - and a packet of pringles just to out do you!!!

    Enjoy the summer

    :o)

  3. If you use slops from the local pub it won't cost you anything. Half fill plastic cups and bury them half way into the ground at various places in your garden. All you have to do is collect the cups in the morning and throw the contents over the hedge or into the compost bin. It's a cheap and easy way to get rid of slugs but it doesn't work with snails and I have no idea why.

  4. My slugs love Bud Light.  I use Bud Light in my fly trap and throw out over 30 dead flies a day.

The Bud Light is my husband's beer; i prefer microbrews.  In fact, the micro I drink has no added sugars in it so the flies and slugs leave it alone.  All the more for me to drink!

Some birds will eat slugs and perhaps have helped themselves to some Slug and Beer early in the morning?  I feed my birds any grubs I find and the grubs are gone within minutes.

  5. THATS A WASTE OF PERFECTLY GOOD BEER!!!!!!!! Use salt when you find them MWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
