  1. Port as in sea port? Damietta (Egypt) ranks high. Tons of crusaders landed there, for instance.

  4. I'd say, possibly, the port of Malacca (Melaka) in what is now Malaysia.

    By the fifteenth century Melaka had become a cosmopolitan trading center and was becoming the gateway to East and Southeast Asian trade.

  6. Umm, interesting question, but fame is very subjective.

    I have always been fond of the Port of Kodiak in Alaska, but I don't believe it was all that famous before 1511.

    My favorite pre-1511 port would probably be Carthage.  It had it all, fame, violence, s*x, and food.  It was the Miami of its day.
