  1. We were worried about a new ice age, and we still should be.  Global warming is happening, and we should be worried about it.  If global warming continues on its course, and nothing is done about it, we will be heading into an ice age.  Because of global warming, the North Atlantic Current (also known as the Gulf Stream) is slowing.  This is because as the ice caps in the north begin melting (due to global warming), the sea water is being diluted with fresh water.  The gulf stream relies on the saltiness of the ocean, and with more dilution comes the slowing down of the current.  If the Gulf Stream stops, warm water that comes to the north from the tropics will stop coming, making it colder.  The reason places like England and other European countries have mild weather is because of the Gulf Stream.  If it stops, th glaciers will stop retreating and start advancing in Europe, North America and Asia, pushing the Northern Hemisphere into an ice age. So we should be worried about both global warming and a new ice age.

  2. I wasn't.  Were you?  When was this and why did you worry about it? There was some minor talk along those lines in the early 70's, backed up by very little science and popularized by global warming deniers like Nigel Calder. I was alive and paying attention to weather and climate then and believe me it was no great worry.

  4. No.   A couple crackpots got together and made a huge media fuss to get a little attention.   Putting any faith in them would be like believing those guys last week actually found  Bigfoot and not worrying about the fact it was a plastic gorilla suit.

  5. yes

  6. Actually no, but historical facts don't seem to stop deniers beating this dead horse.

  7. Turns out that theory has no real basis, but made a few peoples careers.  Some of the older climate scientists swiched sides in the 1980's

  8. Well they played out the same scenario in the 20s and 30s, first the new ice age is coming in the 20s and then the Co2 causes global warming in the 30s. But then it was part of promoting a new refrigerant called Freon that would prevent the possibility of global warming that Co2 refrigerant could cause if it escaped into the air. Remember Freon, it that nasty gas that is supposed to harm the ozone layer. This whole thing is about propaganda and profits, Freon was great up until the patent extensions ran out and they were no longer getting royalties from other companies making it so they got it banned and a new less efficient gas with a fresh patent protection cycle was introduced by them.

There are always a group of tame low level scientists who will sell their souls to who ever pays them the most to promote a specific agenda, remember the tobacco wars in congress. The only part of the green program I can endorse is making our nation energy independent and the core of that is space based solar. Until that happens we will continue to be dependent on other countries for some portion of our energy needs. With it and nuclear

  9. Not for very long since it turned out that global cooling wasn't happening and it was abandoned very quickly.

Scientists tend not to believe something that is wrong for a long time if they have put this much effort into studying it (i.e. if global warming weren't happening or caused by us it would have been shown to the satisfaction of the scientific community a long time ago).

  10. That depends who you mean by 'we'.  If you mean some people in the general public, probably yes.  If you mean the scientific population, then no.  See Myth #1 at the link below.

  11. Believe it or not, but there is already talk about a new ice age. I'm not kidding.

  12. Correct... several scientific papers and journals during the 1970's expressed concern that an global ice age was coming.

In 1981, Dr James Hansen attributed CO2 to Global Warming, stating that we would be seeing "record high" temperatures by 1990 (which didn't happen - in fact 1934 is still the hottest year on record). Now, Hansen serves as Al Gore's science advisor.

Just as there were plenty of reasons to not believe the "Ice Age" theory in the 1970's there are plenty of reasons (and scientific evidence) to NOT believe the "Global Warming" theory today.
