  1. If my memory serves, English was the first Lingua Franca. You should make your question more specific.


  2. What is incient?  If you mean what was used universally, it would have to be French, as that has always been considered the language of diplomacy.  When business became more important than diplomacy, English "won out."  

    There is also the theory that English is a much more flexible language--it has always incorporated others (base of Anglo-Saxon, then Danish, then Norman French and migrating to American English).  French is somewhat inflexible, and the French language-crats are determined to keep it that way.  

    That's why English and French are the two primary languages at the UN, and why everyone must speak both.  There's also a "joke" in the EU that the French didn't want German as the primary language, and the Germans didn't want French, so English won out again.  Thank goodness, or Americans wouldn't be able to speak to anyone :)
