Question:

Before getting braces?

I visited the dentist today and he said I desperately really needed braces ASAP. So I was wondering, how long will it take before I actually get them installed? I mean, does it take long to set up an appointment and get them in?

(btw, im 15)

  1. My twins (age 13) just got braces a few weeks ago. It took a few apointments. First we had an appointment to do impressions and xrays. Then we had an appointment to discuss the issues with the teeth, cost and how long they would have them. Then we had the appointment to get spacers (separaters) which are elastics they stick between the teeth to separate the teeth and make room to put the bands on for braces. They keep those in for one week then they finally got the braces put on. It took about an hour and a half for each kid to get their braces on.

  2. well first you must gave x-rays and molds. if you do that, depending where you live and how much you pay you can probably get them done the following week. i got my x-rays and molds yesterday and im getting my braces next wednesday. i live in ca.

  3. ITS DONE PRETTY QUICK U GO IN FOR A CONSULtation and they takes x-rays pictures and a molding etc and tehy call u in about 2 wks or more or less (it depends ) and u get  (usually) only the bottoms ones and then like next week after, u get the top ones on.

    :)

  4. well after the dentist told me i needed braces... he took some exrays etc. that very day and i got them put in 2 weeks later! but it may be different for you.

  5. Well first i got my consultation, like the x-rays and mold stuff.

Next week I'm getting spacers (which I wear for one week)

Then i get the braces the the following week =)

    3 weeks from consultation :)

  6. Well, your appointment is usually 3 weeks after you call. Then they do molds, consultations, and x-rays. (2 appointments) Then they talk to your parents or guardians and have a meeting to talk about what is done. Usually after the meeting the braces appointments are 3 weeks to a month later!

    Hope I helped!

  7. I am orthodontist and probably can help you with your question. First of all, be careful who puts the braces for you. A general dentist is not trained to finish an Orthodontic case. There is lot more to Braces/Orthodontics than just getting them "installed". I do not have any any thing against General Dentists doing Orthodontics. However, I have seen some nightmarish cases started by General dentists in my northern California Orthodontic practice.

This is my office procedure: I start with consultation, which includes a free exam and records (X rays, Impressions of your teeth and pictures of your profile and intraoral pictures). Once I have all this information, I will trace your X rays (called Cephalometric analysis) and diagnose where the problem is (i.e. Majority of the times it may be just the teeth but sometimes we have to rule out disproportionate jaw growth). Once I have the information, I will inform the patient if any teeth needs to extracted or not. Once the patient is happy with treatment plan, I will go ahead and place the braces. Generally the turn around time is 3-5 days. Hope that helps. Good luck.
