  1. there is a brand of vegan / vegetarian marshmallows....the company is Sweet and Sara.  here is a link to their site:

    http://sweetandsara.com/

you can purchase them at www.veganessentials.com

they're pretty expensive, but they're SO WORTH IT.  i bought two packages recently for a camping trip and they were unbelievable.  my husband is an omni and he even liked them better than regular marshmallows.

you can roast them just like you would a regular marshmallow, but if you put them in the microwave be careful because if you put them in for more than about 10 seconds they explode, lol.  we learned that the hard way.

    enjoy the marshmallow-y goodness =)

EDIT:  to the poster below:  kosher marshmallows ARE NOT vegetarian.  they are made with gelatin derived from fish.  again....kosher DOES NOT mean vegetarian.

  2. Marshmallow Fluff is gelatin free.  There are vegan marshmallows you can order online but they are expensive and very, very sweet.

  3. It does have gelatin, so I don't know if that would be acceptable to you. The other ingredients are just corn syrup, sugar and dextrose.

You could make marshmallows yourself pretty easily using arrowroot or agar instead of the gelatin.

  4. Marshmallow? Those are just puffed sugar! They do have binder but those are made from plant starches.

My bad! I forgot the gelatin that is also present in marshmallows. I guess that does count as an animal derived substance.

  5. marshmallows contain gelatin, which is really annoying. I've heard of vegetarian marshmallows, but never seen them. You could try making your own with kosher gelatin or vegetarian jelly crystals or something - be creative.

(gelatin is boiled down bones, tendons and skin of pigs and cows and occasionally horses)

  6. Yup, it's the gelatin that makes marshmallows non-vegetarian, but don't fret! You have options other than making them yourself!

There are actually a few companies out there who produce vegan marshmallows. I know that Glenny's (www.glennys.com) and Sweet & Sara (www.sweetandsara.com) do. There's also Ricemellow Marshmallow Creme (www.suzannes-specialties.com), which comes in these fairly large tubs and is pretty good.

These products are usually available online from the manufacturers or from vegan online retailers like Vegan Essentials and Pangea, but I've even seen them in some of the smaller, independent health foods stores in my area.

  7. Seriously are kidding me? You drink milk, eat cheese and want too know if you can eat a marsh mellow? You think there could be red meat in there? Poultry? How about you just read the ingredients on the back of the package as you should with any food product when you are trying to avoid a certain set of ingredients.

  8. Most marshmallows are made with gelatin, which is a slaughter byproduct made by boiling bones, hides and connective tissue.  This is why marshmallows are not suitable for vegetarians.  Kosher gelatin is made from fish, so is also not vegetarian.

There are a couple of companies that produce veg-friendly marshmallows, but they are not readily available in regular grocery stores.  If you're lucky, you can find Sweet & Sara marshmallows at Whole Foods.  There is also a company in NZ (Angel Food) which makes a kit you can mail order for making veg-friendly marshmallows at home.

  9. Gelatin is in marshmellows and that is cow fat. Most marshmellows have them because that is what makes them puffy. however, kosher marshmellows do not because gelatin isn't kosher. Try them, they aren't as tasty but they are still pretty yummy
