Ok im going to buy my first subaru wrx sti and I have just a couple questions before I do so.

vehicle history according to owner; never been raced, no warranty, paid off, title in owners hand, no problems what-so-ever)

Vehicle info listed below;

its an 2004 Subaru sti with 47k miles on it. ($20,000)

(link for car==> http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/car/721116302.html )

-do you think its a good price?

-am I going to have to pay for a timing belt rite after I purchase it?

-what should I ask before I buy it?

-would you buy this car if you had the cash?

-how is the gas? (i drive 50 miles ONE WAY to work/school)

-Have you heard of problems with these cars?

-do you think he is asking too much?

thanks

p.s. any information you have, or thoughts you want to vent, please do so. Also, if you already own one, do u regret getting it?

  1. Just so you know there is probably a 95% chance he's lying about "not racing" the car. He may not have technically raced it, but people buy those cars to beat on them. With that said it looks like a good deal. Look over it carefully(better option is to bring a mechanic) and go from there. As for me personally for $20K I'd be looking at a GTO or G35.

  2. When buying a used car  it would be to your advantage to  do the following:

    www.kbb.com  - Kelly Blue Book for value of car .. Use the FAIR value for bargaining leverage

    Excellent

      $20,720

    Good

      $19,585

    Fair

      $18,045

    www.carfax.com  -- A report on this car to see if it has been wrecked , junked etc.  .You need the vin #  and it does cost a fee but worth it!

    Bring your mechanic with you or ask them to let your mechanic check it out ( at your expense)

    Ask to see any repair bills they may already have on this car.

    No timing belt needed .. usually good on most cars to 90 -110,000 miles

  3. Even if he didn't race it, that doesn't mean he didn't beat on it.  It's almost impossible to not beat on that type of car.  But that's ok, they can handle it.

    50 miles each way is a lot, thats about 24k miles per year, in 2 years this $20000 car is going to have 100k miles.  just something to consider.
