  1. I second the person who nominated Alfred the Great, for all the same reasons.

  2. One could make a good case for several, but I personally like

    Edward I a lot.

  3. Henry V

He smashed the french at agincourt!

  4. Edward III and Phillipa of Hainault.  They gained territory for England during the Hundred Years War.

  5. The Plantagenets

  6. Thats a really difficult question, they must all of been good, if they managed to obtain and keep power for a certain time.

I would say William the conquerer though, as he did accomplish an invasion of a country, with Henry V and Edward 1 (as he conquered Wales) close by.

  7. I'm a big fan of Alfred the Great (849-899 AD).  He is the only British king referred to as Great.  He initially ruled Wessex, but exanded his kingdom as he pushed back the Viking invaders.  He is credited with beginning the English Navy.  He was a scholar and strengthened the educational system.  In addition, he greatly improved the legal system and improved the equality of justice.  He was also known as "Protector of the Poor."

  8. Edward The Great...I agree.
