    Folks may not realize that the English had been visiting the New England area long before the Mayflower reached the shores of what is today Massachusetts. Squanto spoke English due to exposure to English men (he had been kidnapped by an English captain in 1605 and returned from England with John Smith in 1613), this made him an excellent interperter between the English of Plimouth Plantation (yes, it's Plimouth Plantation, not Plymouth Plantation, but it is Plymouth colony) and the native Wampanoag.
