Let X be the number of games played before the playoffs.   There will be exactly 6 playoff games, since if you lose, you won't play anymore.  

Since they won 35% of the first games....we can express that fact as 0.35X.

Therefore, the total number of games won can be expressed as 0.35X +6.

They also tell us that they won 50% of the total games.  We can write that as 0.50( X + 6).

Thus, we have 2 ways to write the total games one...

0.35X + 6 and 0.50(X + 6).   We can make an equation out of that:

0.35X + 6 = 0.50(X+6)

0.35X + 6 = 0.50X + 3

6 - 3 = 0.50X -0.35X

3 = 0.15X

20 = X

Therefore, they played 20 games before the playoffs and 6 games during the playoffs for a total of 26 games!
