The sun gets hotter due to the higher-order fusions that occur with the amount of heavier elements created through hydrogen and helium fusion.  The sun's mass will create sufficient gravity pressure to create hydrogen and helium fusion, and possibly the higher order ones as well, until the amount of energy required to fuse the heavier elements is more than gravity can muster.  Then it'll cool down to sub-zero.
