  1. Not unless you want to score well.  You can "pass" without it, but getting your horse on the bit is basic dressage.  You and your horse should be able to accomplish this with just a fe months of lessons.  If your horse is completely new to this, start by spreading your hands wide.  Pull the inside rein back  a little, move your outside hand out a little, and do half halts.  squeeze with the inside leg at the girth; outside leg should be on and behind the girth.  straighten the head, and bend the horse the other way.  moving the bit around the horse's mouth by making them bend each way will help make your horse supple and be on the bit.  It takes a lot of this often and dressage lessons from a great trainer.  You both should be on the bit in no time.

Of course, you can pass intro, but if you want to score well, you ought to be on the bit.

  2. BN dressage transfers to training level dressage(FEI) Imagine a quater horse in a pleasure class, how their head is level with thier withers. This is what you want for BN dressage. You don't want him on the forehand but stretching. Practice getting your horse to do a lot of long and low stretching every time your ride. After a while ask him to go no lower then his withers and hold his postion.

Look at the German training scale you want to have the first 2 levels and be working on the third block.

    Good Luck

  3. Not really. For beginner novice your horse needs to be obedient and relaxed. You should make accurate figures and transitions. Your horse should so some suppleness and impulsion. Nobody is looking for a beginner novice horse to be as round as an advanced horse. Some bobbles and wiggles are forgiven.

  4. Look at the directives they will explain...your hose doesn't neccesarily ahve to be "round" but they must be completely under control and not runny or sloppy.
