Question:

Beginner Ski Lesson - Aspen, February 2009?

Daughter and I are attending a family wedding in Aspen next year. Will be there about 3 days. A shame to visit and not take advantage of skiing, although neither of us have been on skiis or snowboard. Probably have a day to be able to take a lesson and enjoy the snow. Please recommend a place to take a quickie beginner lesson at reasonable prices. Also, we don't own any ski clothing so should we buy something second hand on ebay or would it be best to rent (if this is an option). Our budget is very minimal. All recommendations, guidance, tips will be appreciate. Thank you all!

  1. Well, i think most of the resorts offer beginner packages for about 40-80 dollars (just an estimate). Equipment rental, lesson and beginner's lift ticket is included in the package.

As far as ski clothing goes, you basically only need to buy a ski jacket and a ski bib or snowboard pants (for the snowboarder) You probably have the other stuff. What you can do is wear some clothes not made out of heavy material (like sweat pants, track paints) underneath the ski bib or the snowboard pants. Wear couple layers of thin cothing (like a t-shirt, a track jacket and a sweatshirt hoodie underneath the ski jacket)

do not wear jeans at all. its too thick and you probably will have a hard time putting on your ski or snowboard boots.

  2. Try the area ski school for top quality lessons. Take a group lesson.  You should have your own clothing and gloves and hat. The skis and boots can be rented.  The ski boots must fit tight about your foot and ankle. For clothing, try some Goodwill or other 2nd hand stores.

You will need water repellant pants and jacket, goretex gloves, and some type of sweater and long john underwear. Several thin layers are warmer than one heavy layer. Most of this clothing is standard outdoor wear for the northern 1/2 of the country, except the pants.  Try the clothing for size before you buy.  Ski equipment and clothing when purchased sight unseen, can be very disappointing and inappropriate for it's intended use.  You can probably gain a great deal of info at the Aspen web site.  If I can be of further help ask.

I've been teaching for 44 years.
