  1. If you want to really be a photographer,  don't start with a digital.  Buy a SLR with 50mm.lens.  You will work with it and learn and one day want a bigge  lens and then you will want one so big it wll require a tripod to support it.

    You will be frustratee at times, but you will never be sorry you got that camera.


  2. Nikon D80 (or the less expensive, earlier D40)

    Canon Xti (or the updated, somewhat better but more expensive XSi)

    Of the bunch, the Nikon D40 is the best beginner SLR IMO.

    That's considering price, ease of use, pic quality.

    p.s. edit: I just caught the answer below,  and agree 100%

    If you're really serious about photography a film SLR is the best place to start.
