I am learning guitar on my own and basically what is happening is I am just learning to play songs and pieces either by looking up the tab/chords online or playing from some books i have.

so basically i have the technique but cannot improvise or anything like that. What can I do to increase my learning apart from see a music instructer?

I started learning some scales but don't really know what to do with them!

What can I do to play like santana?

  1. HIRE A TEACHER... if you think you can self teach and miraculously play like Santana by watching a few videos, you could not be any more wrong.

HIRE A TEACHER... at least for the first few lessons, just to get you started right.  People who think they can self teach always end up hitting a brick wall when their LACK of knowledge of the basics makes it impossible for the them to get any better.

You need the BASICS first before you start playing like Santana or anyone else and the only REAL way to get the basics is by HIRING A TEACHER.

  2. Take some lessons from a good instructor.  I started at 10, and I'm almost 55 now.  I learned from some excellent teachers, three were studio players and two played in famous rock bands from California.. I learned a lot from the Berklee books, especially the William Levitt guitar books.  At 10 I was feeling pretty good about my progress and asked my instructor when I would finally learn to play.. he smiled and said.. you'll always be learning.. He was right!  Regarding Santana, I was a big fan of Santana in my teens, and a few years ago, became good friends with a member of the band and even played at his house..  I prefer listening to guys like Mike Stern these days.. Good luck.

  3. All you can really do is practice.  Practice, practice, practice.  If you want some new excersizes, you can find a bunch of stuff on youtube.  Just type in guitar lessons or something along those lines.  I've been teaching myself for the past 6 months, and I think I'm doing pretty ok.  A teacher would no doubt make it easier, but I like a challenge. :)

  4. go to http://www.justinguitar.com and watch the one on blues he teaches you how to improvise your solos also try searching for blues improvisation on youtube and try to copy some what what the people do there and also try starting out on pentatonic scale it's a lot easier to study.
