  1. When you are running, avoid taking any breaks to walk, instead slowing down to a slow jog. While this is difficult to maintain, it helps immensely in increasing your endurance. Also, don't get cheap cross trainers for running, you want a good pair of runners that are comfortable, fit close to your foot, and have a good shock absorbing heel.

  2. The best link is www.runnersworld.com (they produce the magazine) There you will find everything from beginner to advanced, nutrition plans, shoe reccomendations, etc.

  3. A lighter shoe is always a good thing. Go to a store that specializes in sports (I prefer Flying Feet but d**k's works too). Nike makes some that aren't to heavy and the material breathes really well.

  4. 5K is a lengthly distance for a race.  It's great that you have the biking experience as it will enable you to handle the intense cardio involved in running the 5k.

I would suggest a work-out schedule that would steadily increase the distance and time you run.  For example, for week one, you should try to run 1 mile for 2 days and 10 minutes for the other 2 days.   Week 2, increase it to 1.5 miles and 15 minutes, etc.

This should get you prepared for the 5K.  Remember to also purchase the proper runnings shoes, avoid hard surfaces if possible, stretch before and after the runs, and stay focused.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll make it!
