Beginner to guitar self taught three weeks stuck and very confused?

Question

i was given a guitar and book by a friend was learning alright doing the lessons and progressing pretty quickly till igot to the lessons about chords (C and G7) and how to start strumming i was getting comfortable with the two chords and wanted to start with the excersises but i couldnt make heads or tails with what i was seeing the had the chords to play i think above the staff and notes but i dont know if i play just the chords shown or if i have to use the notes shown also or vise versa im stumped and i realy need an answer so i can continue to learn.

It's hard to advise without reference. Which book is it? Most of the time the beginning exercises will give you short exercises with single notes that are contained within the two chords you're learning so you barely have to change hand position.
