Question:

Beginner training for 10 mile run?

I was wondering approximately how long it will take for a beginner like myself to train for a 10 mile run.

I'm planning to do the Broad Street Run possibly next year or at least once before i graduate high school. It's in May so I'm wondering if that is enough time. I went out for a mile run for the first time this summer (I know, pretty late) yesterday and i managed to do it under 8 minutes. I have never ran 2 miles or more though. I do play basketball and softball at my school so I'm not sure how to train when i have practice.

Oh and I'm 15, (16 for the run however) and i'm pretty fit and slender.

any tips or suggestions would really help me. Thanks, =]

  1. Check out the podcast "Podrunner Intervals."

It's free, and it might just get you there.

  2. Wake up early in the morning and jog 1 mile the first day you start your training. Run a mile each morning for 2 weeks. Run 2 miles each morning for the next 2 weeks. Run 3 miles each morning for 2 weeks. Run 4,5,6,7,8,9 miles the next 12 weeks(each 2 weeks). Finally run 10 miles each morning until next May.

  3. Just go out and run.

Maybe 3-5 miles everyday, for maybe 3-4 times a week. With some stretching at the end.

Running now will help you a long way till the 10 mile run.

Make sure you have good shoes though, the mistake most beginners make is they think their shoes are "running shoe", but they are not.

Poor shoes can lead to foot pain and even injury, so go to your local running shop, and they will find a nice pair of shoes for you.

    Good luck!

  4. u can EASILY do it in about 2 months. (i was a beginner cross country runner last year).

there are two things u need to work on: speed and distance

every four days or so, only run a mile as FAST AS YOU CAN

all the other days, jog slowly for at least 5 miles.

    get a running buddy.

getting in shape is hard to do on your own.

    hope i helped!

  5. ok, well i'm 15 and i run alot, and usually go on an average of an 8-15 mile run every day (no joke)  and i run my mile in 5:20, what i did when i recently got good at running was to run every day, don't run for mileage yet, just run for time, (i recommend 40 minuets to start out with) and really try to run at least 5 days a week (i'm required to run 7) have monday and tuesday be 40 min runs, wendsay be an easy day (30 min) thursday 40-55 minuets friday 40-55 minuets and saturday or sunday be your long day (50+)

now you don't have to start out running for this amount of time, just start slow and work your way up, and before you know it you'll be running for 10+ miles :) good luck :)

  6. My running coach used to start us off with a 1 mile warm up after stretching of course. After that we would run a couple of sprints like 100 m, 200 m 400 m, then take a 4 minute break, then run a 400 m, 200 m, 100 m.  Then after that we would do some cross training to strengthen our suppor muscles. Plyometrics are good for starting out cross training exercises, just be sure to do enough of them to get a benefit.

Doing a routine like that or similar with weight trainng included 3 day a week had us ready to run 10 miles within 4 months or less.

If I were you, I would do a similar routine on Mondays.

Wednesdays I would do a long run, as long as you can, then weight train afterwords.

Then Fridays I would do Monday routine again, but with a long run afterwords instead of cross training.

Try to recover on the weekends and get some good protein, chicken, fish

Drink lots of water and only a little gatorade while training.

Be sure to get at least 9 hours of sleep a night, because thats when your body rebuilds itself the most.

Remember the most important thing to training for anything is Consistancy and nothing else. As long as you showup 3 to 4 days a week, there is no way you wont excel at it. So show up, then in a few months you can show off.
