  1. If your school works like the schools in my area, they won't actually cut anybody who is willing to put the time in.

At our school, if you weren't varsity material, you were put on the junior varsity lineup.  We had enough people out my senior year to actually have two JV teams.  They both had full traveling schedules.  It's a great way to get playing experience, no matter what level you are.

Now, if you want to try for one of the "better" positions, you will need to practice as much as possible this summer.  If you aren't taking them yet, get some private lessons from a good teacher.

Other than that, do some distance running to work on the endurace, and some short sprints for speed.  It's also best to throw in a shuttle run, or some other sprinting activity that forces you to change direction quickly.  It's great to be fast, but you also have to be able to change direction quickly.

And when the time comes, don't worry about it.  Just go out and have fun.  If you do that, then you should be fine.  Good luck!

  2. Well Mr. Beginner, I don't know how good or bad your high school is but don't worry about it. An acquaintance of mine only played for like a few weeks before trying out. What I believe the coach looked for was not neccessarilly skill, but also their love for the game. The peron that tried out made it, even though he could only get like 1/5 shots in. Since you have more experience than him, and obviously want and put the effort to play, then you will make it. When I first started I sucked, but I improved becayse of my desire to get better. Within a year, considering if you have countless hours of practice, it could lead you to become #1 or 2 doubles and #1-3 singles.
