Beginners music making program and equiptment for computers?

Me and my brother want to make a cd for our father who has been a guitarist for many years, but never was able to make a cd. Hes getting old now and we think this might be his last chance to make a cd. My brother and I know about computers but nothing about music, music making programs or equiptment. We need to know which programs and equiptment to buy, and some info on how to make music. As well we are the only ones who can help him with this because we can not afford a studio. Help and info will be appreciated.

Hi there both brothers,

It is really so good to hear from you about what you want to do for your father. Reason I feel very close to what you wrote is becausae I myself am somewhat into the same league as your father (pardon me but I do not know you dad's age - I'm 44!).

While I can give you some steps to go about doing what you want, I do need to know a few things, e.g. say in case you have the best of equipment and software to do it, can you still compose and record? What do you want to record? New songs? Songs of someone else? And though you say you know nothing of music, I must say you do need to be able to create tunes and then record.
