Beginning of a new era: St. Louis Rams appoint Jeff Fisher as head coach – NFL News Update
Former Tennessee Titans’ coach, Jeff Fisher has officially taken up the responsibility as St. Louis Rams’ head coach after signing a five-year deal with the franchise on Tuesday, January 17, 2012.
The Rams announced the appointment, in a press conference following signing of the conrtact between the stakeholders.
During the last couple of weeks, Fisher had been meeting the officials of the Rams and Miami Dolphins – both of them wanted him to join their respective franchise.
While addressing the press conference, Fisher underlined different factors that led him to join the Rams.
He further informed that he was looking for such a franchise whose owner would share the same vision which he carries.
Moreover, Fisher also wanted a good quarterback while communicating his future plans with the press.
"My decision was very, very simple. It was based on the collective vision of (owner) Stan (Kroenke) and (chief operating officer) Kevin (Demoff) for the future of this franchise. More specifically, restoring this franchise to a place of significance. It
was that vision that made my decision very, very easy. I had two factors. One was a good owner. The other was a good quarterback”.
Although Rams’ quarterback, Sam Bradford, who was the number one overall pick of the 2010 National Football League (NFL) draft, did not have a very good season this time, Fisher thinks that the player has the potential to improve his performance.
Bradford played 10 games this season, in which he completed 191 passes of 357 attempts for 2,164 yards, while throwing six touchdowns and as many interceptions.
"I think he has a chance to be a top quarterback in the NFL very, very soon", Fisher said of Bradford.
The appointment of Fisher has come after the Rams finished off with 14 defeats in the regular season.
The Rams fired the then head coach, Steve Spagnuolo, and general manager, Billy Devaney, after the failure.
According to different reports, Fisher will also have an input in the selection of new general manager for the franchise.
Meanwhile, the Rams are also expected to appoint New Orleans Saints’ defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, as Fisher’s assistant.
However, Fisher refrained from talking about Williams’ appointment and said that he is considering different options.
Fisher’s appointment has marked a beginning of new era for the franchise. His experience will be very helpful in leading the Rams to winning ways.
