Hello, I am feeling depressed going back to school..The work there is easy, but I always take all AP or honors classes. I get home from school, do homework, study, then by the time I am done, I have to go to sleep. I finished the first week of school already, and it feels like I don't have a social life anymore. :( When will I adjust to this school year? I just keep thinking and missing all my classes I took last year..

  1. Reading this worries me ... but your name worries me even more. Obviously, you are a smart kid and you want to do well in school to get to college and make something terrific out of your life. That is great - nothing wrong there. But intelligent or not ... you are a still a kid. You only have one shot at childhood. This is it. You say that school is "easy" yet it is taking you all night just to do your homework and study. That is NOT healthy. Human beings (not just kids) need fresh air ... they need human interaction ... and we all need to play (even adults) or we will be depressed and unhealthy.

I am a teacher ... and I can tell you that feeling a little blue at the beginning of the school year is normal ...even teachers feel that on occasion believe it or not. Summer is over and it's back to work for all of us. However, you having a social life, friends, and getting plenty of exercise are as important as your doing well in school. You must understand that. Burning yourself out before you even get to college is becoming an epidemic among high achieving high school students. And it isn't worth it. What good is living life if you can't have any fun? What's the point?

You must find a balance because life is about all of these things. You can still do well in school, be successful and have fun. So if you have to take one less class ... or settle for a B instead of an A  .. so be it. Getting so stressed and never giving yourself a break is what's causing your blues (or depression). Talk to your parents or a school counselor and get some help. Enjoy being young while you still have the chance. If you don't not only will it wreck your health .. but it will be the biggest regret you have when you get older. Trust me on that.

Take care of yourself and best of luck to you!
