Question:

Beginning runner, help please!?

Hi, I've decided that I would like to start running as a way to help me lose weight since it's good cardio and cheap (can't get cheaper than free).

I would like some advice as to what a good "starting amount" of miles would be. There's this loop that I take occasionally when I walk my Aunt's dogs. It's about 3 miles and has a couple of hills but is relatively easy.

Should I try to just run the entire 3 miles from the get go (at a decent pace, not a sprint, obviously) or work my way up? Should I walk the first, to warm up, and then just try running the last two? Or run as much as I can and then walk what I can't?

I've been working out 5-6 times a week and maintain a very healthy diet, I'm working towards a goal of losing 35-40lbs (or at least losing fat and replacing it with muscle).

Thanks for the advice!

  1. I've read articles that running faster is better for losing weight than slow jogging. I suggest you shorten that amount to 1 mile and make it a faster pace run and try to lower your time. If that's too little you can run once in the morning and again in the evening.

  2. Since you have been staying healthy, I'd say go for the whole 3 miles at a steady pace. If you do happen to become dizzy or dehydrated, don't hesitate to stop and walk. Just take it easy and good luck :D

  3. 10 percent rule.  Do not increase your walking/running distance per week by more than 10 percent.  This holds true from my own experience.  More than this you are inviting injury.  Go for 1 mile jog/run.  Next day, 1and a half and keep adding by a half mile each day is the safest way.  Good luck.

  4. like the previous answerer said, definitely find your happy place but also stick with it.  i've been a runner for about 4 years and it is always much more enjoyable when you run frequently and put in the time

  5. okay first of all, that a GREAT choice that you made to start running cuz running is my favorite thing to do!

when I did cross country, i did five miles for my first run and it was hard  so three miles is good in the beginning. as for pace, you wont need a warm up mile if you do PLENTY of stretching in the beginning. my friends and i heard this thing that kinda stuck. its FIND YOUR HAPPY PACE! it means find the pace that works you out but doesnt kill u! :)

good luck and remember to stretch a lot before and after you run to prevent injury!!!!!!!!!!!
