I have been noticing that NBC has been advertising the Beijing 2008 Olympics on DVD (the opening ceremony, the Michael Phelps-Greatest Olympic Champion video, and season highlights)
I was interested in buying that but there are some things that turn me away from getting a DVD copy
When NBC filmed the Beijing Olympics, it was the first Olympiad to be broadcast in 1080i HD, and with the opening ceremony, the birds nest, and the watercube, there is no way I would want to see that in 480p ED or 480i SD, it was just one of those things that must be viewed in HD, SD or ED just doesn't do it justice
DVDs only support the SD and ED resolutions, and while there are upscailing DVD players that claim to display in 1080i/p, we all know that they are just a joke, there is no way you can get 1080 lines of resolution out of a source that is 480 lines of resolution without an internet connection and having the DVD player download it, there is no way to recreate 600 lines of nonexistent resolution
So it would be a bad idea for NBC to record the whole thing in 1080i HD, then just record it on a 480p DVD to sell
Which leads to my question, does NBC or some other company plan on recording the Olympic highlights, the Michael Phelps video, the Opening Ceremony, had hopefully the Closing Ceremony on Blu-Ray disc?
