Question:

Being Fired From A Cruise Ship Job?

So let's say you have a job on a cruise ship and you are fired. What happens? Do they make you walk the plank immediately? Do they put you off at the next port, leaving you with the expense of returning home?

Instead of being fired, what if you quit?

  1. I remember talking to some people in the cruise, and they had expenses paid to visit home. It may vary by the position, but I would assume they would pay for you expenses to return home. Anyhow I would expect that kind of question to be asked when you interview, or at best, get hired for the job...

  2. I don't know what line the guy above me worked for, but for my line, being fired was rather common.  We held "Captain's Court" (where you stood in front of the captain and let him decide whether you stay or go) when the ship is in port.  If you are fired, you have 2 hours to pack and you're escorted off the ship.  You pay for your way home.

People can be fired on the ship for any/all things you could be on land-- no show to work, constant tardiness, poor work appearence.. even being caught eating in the galley several times can get you canned.

If you decide to quit, you give your week/two week notice like anywhere else, and arrange for your own way home.

  3. You really have to make some pretty big mistakes to get fired off a ship. Employment on ships is always on a 4-6 month contract basis. It is just easier for the Lines not to renew your next contract.

However, If you do get fired (theft, s*x with passengers, fighting etc) then they will keep you in your cabin with onboard security standing by your door. You are not permitted to leave your cabin until you arrive in the next port of call. If the port is not in your home country (i.e US), security or local immigration (sometimes in handcuffs and very humiliating, especially for girls) will escort you to the nearest international airport.

You will then be forced to pay for the next flight out and will be escorted to your seat.

Just remember that this is very rare as you have to be really bad to be fired. If you quit, you will still have to pay for your flight home but everyone will be a lot less strict with you. If you have a death in the family or medical issues, they are very understanding and will help you when they can.
