  1. You don't need an IDP as your licence will be in English.

If you are only coming as a Visitor, then you are not limited to the 3 months.  You can drive on a UK licence for as long as it is valid, and you have a visitor Visa.  Except maybe in WA when it is a 12 month limit.

  2. No, you do not need an International Driving Permit to drive in Australia. You can obtain one if you choose to be it's not a requirement.

If you're asked to show your licence the police etc will want to see the licence issued by your country of origin not necessarily your IDP.

After 3 months you will be required to get a licence from the traffic authority in the state in which you are residing.

(Usually with no testing because you have already been tested to obtain the one you have from home.)

A good site with Australia-wide (State by State) information is:

    Australian Drivers Licensing.

    Driving in Australia -

International visitors may drive in Australia on a valid overseas driver's licence that covers the same vehicle class. Whilst driving ensure that you carry your licence with you and if it is not in English carry a translation.

  3. Elizabeth was right, you can drive for three months without one but for longer you need to register for a license.

  4. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not required for UK licence holders.

They are required when your normal licence is in a different language, and must accompany your VALID National licence.

An IDP is NOT a licence in itself, but effectively just a Translation of your licence.

If your overseas licence is not in English, it is advisable to carry an International Driving Permit or an approved English translation of your licence with you when you drive.
