Question:

Being a primary school teacher?

Can teachers leave straight after the children and go home and do work or do they have to do all the extra work at school?

I am thinking of becoming a primary teacher but would rather do marking, etc at home rather than staying at school until about 6pm.

  1. I am a Year 1 teacher. I am in school by 8 am and leave between 5.30 and 6 pm! I do spend some time chatting with my colleagues, although often that is education based so still important. I do know teachers who work shorter hours but they have to be VERY organised and focused. There is a lot of planning, preparation, assessment, paperwork and also your classroom to make good. It is not a 9 - 3.30 job and never has been. However it is a great job!

  2. Depends what YOU want to do!

Sometimes there will be meetings so you will have to stay for another hour or so

  3. I think that when you become a teacher you have to accept that in term time you can do little else unless you are part time. It is a great job but you will always have stuff to do both at home and at school especially in the first few years. You can't just leave work and forget about it. Most teachers with families I know leave between 4 and 5 and take work home. Good luck!

  4. Sounds like you have the right work ethic to be a teacher. Lazy and worried about getting home on time.

  5. You don't need to stay until 6pm.

Most schools have a time teachers have to be in the building.

However my hubby stays behind say 30-45mins and then brings most of his marking home. However some days he will stay behind longer to arrange displays etc.

But some of his colleagues with young kids in another school, arrive at the last minute and leave straight away so they can do the school run.

You can fit teaching and a family.

    Good luck

  6. It depends on the contract that your school district follows.  In my district we have to stay until 3:30 (school gets out at 3:00).  On Fridays, we are allowed to leave {nearly} when the students do.

However, I felt the same way you did.  But, from experience, I found that I got more work done in school.

Good luck - and remember - check your contract!
