I am going to be a substitute teacher this upcoming year in a couple of districts. I am going to be going to get my masters in the spring to hopefully become a school counselor, so I need to become a teacher for 2 years before I can start as a school counselor. If I sub for a semester and pass my TEXES content exam, do you think I can get a teaching job in the spring time (for middle school science)? How likely is it to get teaching jobs in January for that semester? How long do you have to be a sub to be a teacher? Any help would be great, thanks!

  1. I teach in PA, but I feel the substitute situations are generally similar across the board.

When I was hired to teach 5th grade Math, it was after the school year had started.  I started the end of the first week of October.

I feel like the later after the start of the school year, your chances of being hired before the next school year slims, but is not impossible.  If there are no permanent positions available, don't shy away from LTS or long term substitute positions.  The key is to GET CERTIFIED!!!!

From what I understand, there is no requirements to how long you have to sub for.  I never subbed a day in my life and will be starting my 7th year of teaching.
