It depends on your citizenship. Your resident permition is valid only for the country you are allowed to live in. Exception: wenn you are married to an european citizen and got your permet through marriage.

As you do not mention what for citizenship you have, check in the following link (Official Web of the German Ministry of Foreing Affairs) . In the list of countries  you can see if you need a visa or not, remember what counts is your citizenship not your residence permit:

Australia is NOT part of the Schengen Agreement, first Australia is not in Europe and sencond  the only territories outside Europe that belong to this Agreement are either non-European areas of Portugal and Spain and some  overseas regions that belongs to european countries, Australia is not in any of those categories.

You generally don't need a Visa if you stay less than 90 days for vacation or business.

If you plan to work in Germany, you'll need a working permit Visa

But you best check back with the German Embassy in Australia what applies for you.

The following nationalities can enter Germany visa free for a maximum period of 90 days, be it for business or pleasure:

all EU countries

US

Canada

Australia

New Zealand

Japan

South Korea

Israel

Switzerland

almost all Latin American countries (except Cuba, Haiti, Belize, Nicaragua, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia - i think that's it)

If you have one of these nationalities you can stay up to 90 days per half year without a visa but you are not permitted to work. Business negotiations, job trainings, trade fair visits or manning a stand at a trade fair etc are not considered as work.

If you have any other nationality you have to apply for a visa at one of the German missions in Australia (Embassy in Canberra, consulates in Sydney and Melbourne). Depending on your nationality the visa process can take between 2 and 12 days. If you are a Somali national or a Palestinian holding a Lebanese travel document you can't apply for visit visas.
